I have had the pleasure of photographing Stephanie many times. Somehow we come up with creative projects and actually make them happen. After seeing the stunning traditional clothing they wear to powwows around the province, I asked if they would be interested in doing a fun shoot and thankfully they agreed.
I also asked them to share, in their own words, what it means to share their heritage and traditions with others.
"This photoshoot represents a meaningful revival of our cultural heritage. During the era of residential schools, efforts were made to eradicate Indigenous identities and traditions, by “killing the Indian in the child”.
For years, our parents and grandparents faced restrictions that forbade the wearing of regalia, the ownership of ceremonial items, and the practice of traditional dance.
This period of cultural suppression prevented us from expressing and taking pride in our identities.
Today, our regalia serves as a powerful symbol of reclaiming and celebrating our indigenous heritage, and it reflects our resilience in overcoming past policies that sought to diminish our identity.
Through our dance, we honour the spirit of reconciliation, we remember those who were unable to dance or practice traditional ceremonies.
It reaffirms our connection to Mother Earth, the well-being of our youth, and future generations. We’ve been taught there is always someone observing our actions, and for us, that’s our children. We move with intention, striving to be positive role models and ensuring our children have the resources and opportunities to take pride in their indigenous heritage."
